There was no racial tension, but then again, no sense of black community. There were quite literally no black people at all. When people asked me about my ethnicity, I would often just mumble something about tanning easily and change the subject, and I brushed off racist slurs like any other insult. Race does, unfortunately, add another gigantic element of complexity.
In my experience, these dynamics with non-Black men usually play into one of two narratives: fetishisation or vilification. We are constantly self-policing our tone, words and mannerisms to diminish whatever perceived threat we present by virtue of simply existing.
